Korea // Day 3: Nerding Out

Today i was on a mission to find myself a cheap tripod…and hopefully put it to use!  Since im traveling alone and have nothing but my cameras, and a couple of books, i figure i better put all of those things to use!  SO, today i found a tripod, finished my current book Deep Economy, and….

i managed to sleep in till like 7am i think this morning (the sun was a little slower to rise), but the place started heating up pretty quickly so packed my bag with a couple cameras, some maps of Seoul, the book im reading, Deep Economy (i suggest ALL of YOU read this book, nuff said) and a site seeing agenda!!

First stop the ELECTRONICS MARKET - Hey fellow nerds, check this out!! Its  “a retail area in Seoul, South Korea, comprising over 20 buildings housing 5,000 stores that sell appliances, stereos, computers and peripherals, office equipment, telephones, lighting equipment, electronic games and software, videos and CDs.“… at a relatively good price, considering many of these products are coming straight from the source, AND you can often haggle…just gotta say “ggakk-a ju-se-yo” meaning “discount please.”

I cruised, or rather, i got lost in the catacombs of the Electronics Market for a couple hours… oooohing and aaaaawing over all of the toys that i ddin’t need.   It took me awhile to find camera gear, i apparently kept looping the cell phone and computer zones.  Finally i found a cheap, lightweight tripod that will serve my purpose… i worked the guy down from 25,000 Korean WON (about $24 bucks) down to 21,000 and was pretty stoked to have gotten a chance to use one of my new Korean words “ggakk-a ju-se-yo“.

So next i got lost for quite awhile looking for the nearest subway station so i could head out for some more adventures.  Some how i ended up near my friend Amanda’s house so i figured id stop for a little potty break, some snacks and a quick wipe down (from sweating prefusely)…. my little stop turned into a 3hr nap!!!! SO good… and just part of the journey…. :)

After my nap i continued to bask in afternoon sun and glory of having to do nothingness at this little park out front of Amanda’s place.  I finished Deep Economy, ate some leftovers from last night, and continued my lovely afternoon of nothingness!  OH, i did do some research on busses and subway transfers for tomorrow…talked to the family via Skype, and charged some camera batteries…i did do a little something i guess.

You may be wondering about this Deep Economy i keep pushing?  Its a good read, not super dry or just about boring ol’ economics as the title may mislead.  Its pretty straightforward… the book basically talks about how we are currently living our lives, how THEY tell us to live our lives…BIGGER is better, and MORE is better.  The truth is that the way we are living is NOT sustainable and examples of this are all around us and clear to see when looking at the economic crisis that we find ourselves in today, obesity amongst our youth, deterioration of our farming industry, the surge of new diseases and cancers and so on… but the cool thing is that there is SO much that we can do in our lives individually that will have a collective impact on the economies surrounding our food system, commerce, the environment and even promote tighter knit communities and a sense of belonging.  Its super interesting and not super pushy, give it a chance and i swear it will at least give you something to chew on… or a good conversation for the next time that i see you!

Bill McKibben offers the biggest challenge in a generation to the prevailing view of our economy. For the first time in human history, he observes, “more” is no longer synonymous with “better” — indeed, for many of us, they have become almost opposites. McKibben puts forward a new way to think about the things we buy, the food we eat, the energy we use, and the money that pays for it all.

Hmmm, now what to read?  “12 Steps to Raw Foods: How to End Your Dependency on Cooked Food” or “The Audacity of Hope“…..
